Solti was an outstanding conductor in spite of the fact that as a human being e individual person, he was dementially egotistical, absolutely self-centered and incredibly self indulgent and quite paranoid as a person.

I had to watch 18 ads in the duration of this symphony! A disgrace for setting ads on this video! A big shame!!!!!

I heard the broadcast when I was nine years old. It changed my view of music forever.

One of the reasons why this is such an emotional performance was Respighi's key role in getting Toscanini and his family out of Italy before the fascists could come down on them. So, in a way, this performance and many others would not have happened without Respighi.

The works has a lot of similarities (in thematic material) with the beautiful String Quartet from 1918. Did Elgar use this work as a basis for writing this Symphony? Reed should have noticed this...

Well done for reviving this recording. It has all the drawbacks AND advantages of analogue tape. Sometimes the sound is so incredibly raw and so much more dynamic sounding than the smoothed out digital equivalent. Overall I think it is a very individual performance worthy of the trouble you took in reviving it. The cello sounds extraordinarily direct and exposed, almost painfully, but somehow very compelling. Apart from the runaway rhythm at the points you mention I think Shipway does a fine job here, and the orchestra is top notch.
